The castles of Salento
Salento is full of castles and going around countrysides it is simple to see some ancient manor totally forgotten which is yet the proof of ancient times.
Acaya:
Aragonese castle built on pre-existing rests and towers in 1506 by the Baron Alfonso Acaja. His son Gian Iacopo built the city walls and supplied the castle of bulwarks and a moat(1536).
Acquarica del Capo:
Sforza's castle of the 15th century.
Alessano:
A fortified residence of Gonzaga's family (16th century) and another one of San Giovanni's family (1538).
Andrano:
The imposing castle of 1700, with its quadrangular plant, was the sumptuous residence of the Caracciolo's family. The ancient nucleus before it was built in the 12th century. In 1600, totally rebuilt, it assumed the actual aspect of aristocratic residence.
Aradeo:
Fortified residence of Barons of the 16th century, amplified in 1655. The large rooms were sumptuous for their rich baroque decorations.
Arnesano:
The marquisal palace was built by the Maresciallo in 17th century, then restored and amplified in 1684 by the following feudal lord Prato.
Borgagne (Melendugno):
There is a feudal castle of the 16th century, built in 1497 by the feudal lord Belisario Pratarolo.
Botrugno:
Fortified residence with a rectangular plant built by the Castriota Scandeberg in 1500 as a marquisal palace and restored in 1725: its front has a continous loggia.
Campi Salentina:
Residence of a lord of a castle, built by Enriquez in 1627 on the pre-existing Castle of Maramonte, of which there are visible traces on the east side.
Cannole:
Nowadays it rimains only a tower of the marquisal castle built by Granafei in the 17th century.
Caprarica (Tricase):
A feudal castle with a regular structure and minuscule dimensions.It was built in 1524 by Antonio Renna of Tricase.
