The Cave of Deers

Salento or peninsula of Salento, well known as the " heel of Italy", is a subregion situated along the south of Apulia, between the Ionic sea to the west and the Adriatic sea to the East.

Inhabitants this area have different linguistics and cultural characteristics from the rest of the region. From the historical point of view, this subregion has been for many centuries the ancient area called "Terra d'Otranto". The toponym Salento has uncertain origins. According to Marco Cosmai, it derivates from "salt" (sale), meaning "a land enclosed by salt-sea". In fact, Romans were useful to name Sallentini the unhabitants of marshs around the Gulf of Taranto.
